Harold Robert 'Bob' Nelson

Harold Robert "Bob" Nelson, 91, of Danville passed away at 3:03am on Monday May 28, 2018. Bob was born in Ashland, IL on May 29, 1926, the son of Edward and Elva Mae Nelson. On February 7, 1960 Bob married the love of his life Gloria Cook and they spent the next 58 years together before his passing, she survives. Bob is also survived by his son, Greg (Leah) Nelson, daughter, Jackie (Steve) Kelly, half-brother, Edward Nelson Jr., Half-sister, Karen Westenhaver; grandchildren, Jeremy (Carrie) Nelson, Stephanie Kelly, five step-grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and 10 step-great grandchildren. Bob is preceded in death by his parents, brother, Gilbert Nelson and brother-in-law, Jerry Cook. During World War II he enlisted in the Marine Corps at the age of 16. He was a decorated combat veteran serving with the 2nd Marine Division in the battles of Tarawa, Tenenan, Saipan and Okinawa. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Upon returning from World War II, he began working at the Danville Veteran's Administration. He retired in 1985 with 33 years of service. Bob was a member of the VFW 728. In his spare time he enjoyed going to flea markets and rummaging. Bob loved his family dearly and would give up anything to spend time with them. He will be deeply missed. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 12pm on Friday June 1, 2018 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center 3940 N. Vermilion, Danville. Burial will be in Danville National Cemetery. Visitation will be held prior to service on Friday June 1, 2018 from 10am to 12pm. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be placed to Operation Honor Guard, 3901 N. Vermilion, Danville.
