Harlen Dale Swisher, 75, of Armstrong, passed away on Thursday, January 15, 2009 at 8:50 p.m. at the home of his daughter, Terry Johnson. Harlen was born April 28, 1933 in Danville, IL, the son of Henry Lemuel and Fern (Edwards) Swisher. He married Elaine Riley on February 7, 1953 in Elizabeth City, NC. She preceded him on December 25, 1996. Survivors include his five children; Terry (Butch) Johnson of Armstrong, Michael Swisher of Terre Haute, IN, Carolyn (Stoney) Brewer of Bossier City, LA, Sandy (Terry) Nelson of Vincennes, IN, and Cindy (Erich) Keller of Corinth, TX; ten grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; one brother, Robert Swisher of Danville; and one sister, Mary Hansbrough of Danville. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and three siblings, William, Melvin and Helen. Harlen attended Henning Schools. He entered the United States Marine Corps in 1950 where he proudly served until 1970. Harlen served his country in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He farmed with his brother before retiring. Harlen enjoyed mushroom hunting, fishing, playing euchre and woodworking. He was truly a die hard Cubs fan! Harlen also enjoyed listening to his favorite country music station. Harlen was a life member of the American Legion in Paris, IL. He also belonged to the Fairview Sportsman Club and the Pt Mugu Marine Club. A celebration of life for Harlen Swisher will be held at Sunset Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 3940 N. Vermilion Street, Danville, on Tuesday, January 20, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor James Blue officiating. Burial will be held at Danville National Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday, January 19, 2009 from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in Harlens name to the American Cancer Society
