Greggory Scott Alpers

Greggory Scott Alpers, 79, of Danville, IL passed away at OSF Sacred Heart Medical Center at 7:13 AM on April 4, 2026.

Gregg was born on February 1, 1947 to Marion Henry “Hank” and Vivian L. (Palmer) Alpers in Danville, IL. He met his wife Arlene Balsamello while they were both working at GE. They married on October 21, 1967 in Danville, they would have celebrated their 59th anniversary this year.

Survivors include his wife, Arlene Alpers, their children Stephanie (Alan) Wilson and Ryan Alpers all of Danville, IL. They have 4 grandchildren, Darrian (Payton) Chrzanoski of Maryland Heights, MO, Dalton Chrzanoski of Tilton, IL, Payton (Jonathan) Collins of Catlin, IL and Mara Alpers of Danville, IL. Those grandchildren blessed Gregg and Arlene with 4 beautiful great grandchildren, Emersyn, Anderson, Lennon and A'nyla. He will also be missed by his sister, Karen Thomas of Danville, IL, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

After graduating from Danville High School, at 18 years old, Gregg and 2 of his friends enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve on November 10, 1965 which was the 190th Anniversary of the Corps. He was proud to serve his country as a Marine.

He worked at GE, Lauhoff, and owned a business (A & B fence) before retiring as a Supervisor from General Motors Foundry and Delphi after many years of service. After retiring he did not remain idle, choosing to serve both country and the Danville /Vermilion County community he dearly loved, through donation of his time. He was a member of the Marine Corps League, and participated in Toys for Tots every year. He was a past American Legion Post 210 Commander and also served on many of their boards and committees as well as on the Honor Guard.

Gregg loved to play golf and was responsible for resurrecting and bringing the American Legion State Golf Tournament to Danville in 2014. With the help of then Mayor Scott Eisenhauer and the incredible team at the Danville Area Convention and Visitors Bureau the tournament came to fruition and has been growing in size ever since. All proceeds from the tournament are donated to Veteran causes both local and statewide, such as Wreaths Across America, K-9 warriors, Veterans Caring for Veterans, Gateway Family Service just to name a few. His passion for this tournament and the help it provides for Veterans will never be matched.

Gregg also enjoyed coaching his son and grandson’s little league baseball teams and was instrumental in bringing the first electronic scoreboard to American Legion Post 210 ball diamond. He loved watching his granddaughter play softball from Winter Park, to traveling ball, College, and finally, watching her coach.
