Gladys M. Fortner

Newport, Ind. -- Gladys M. Fortner, 81, of Newport, passed away at 6:40 p.m. EDT Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at Union Hospital in Terre Haute, Indiana. Gladys was born December 1, 1927 in Newport, Indiana, the daughter of the late John Arden and Geneva Anglemyer Brown. She married Marvin "Beezer" Fortner on December 11, 1948 in Rockville, Indiana. He preceded her in death on April 22, 1990. Survivors include: two daughters, Gail(Bob)McDowell of New Goshen, Indiana and Cathy Fortner of Newport, Indiana; one son, Kenny(Peg)Fortner of Newport, Indiana; five grandchildren; several great grandchildren; one sister, Betty Parker of Florida; two brothers, Fred Brown of Cayuga, Indiana and Charles(JoAnn)Brown of Terre Haute, Indiana; two special friends, Annabelle Robertson and Jamie Roderick both of Newport, Indiana. Gladys was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers. Gladys retired as a cook and custodian from the former Newport Grade School in 1993. She was a member of the Newport Church of God. Gladys was a 1946 graduate of Newport High School. She enjoyed raising flowers, cooking, fishing, quilting and spending time with her grandchildren. Funeral services: 11 a.m. EDT Saturday, March 21, 2009 at DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Indiana; Officiating: Pastor John Hawkins; Burial: Thomas Cemetery in Newport, Indiana; Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. EDT Friday, March 20, 2009 at the funeral home.
