Gene Welborn

Gene Welborn, 93, of Fisher, IL passed away with his family by his side on the evening of Thursday, June 20, 2024 at Carle Hospital, Urbana, IL.

He was born September 14, 1930 in Gibson City, IL, a son of Hutch and Della (Moore) Welborn.  He married Dorothy Jean Lutz on December 20, 1953 in Osman, IL.  She preceded him in death on December 31, 2019.

He is survived a son Jeffrey Welborn of St. Joseph, IL, a sister Jane (Leonard) Hylbert of Rantoul, IL, 4 grandchildren, Matt Burgess of Fisher; Mandie (Craig) Corie of Crown Point, IN; Ben Burgess of Fisher; Haley (Michael) Miller of Sidney, IL, and 2 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter Jodi and his twin brother Jack.

Gene and Jack were the first set of twins to be drafted into the Army, and served during the Korean War.  He returned to the Fisher area and ran a service station, worked for the Village of Fisher in Public Works, built and maintained a carwash in Fisher, and then made a 22-year career driving trucks at JM Jones.  Throughout that time, he farmed in the Fisher area for various family members or friends.

He was a member of the Osman Lutheran Church.  He enjoyed working in the yard and spending time with family.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 on Thursday morning at the Osman Lutheran Church.  Rev. Jeff McPike will officiate.  He will be buried beside his wife in Willowbrook Cemetery, Fisher.

Visitation will be from 4-6 on Wednesday evening at Lux Memorial Chapel, 1551 East Grove, Rantoul.
