Gene Lewellyn, 80, of Oakwood, passed away at Kindred Hospital in Indianapolis, IN with family by his side on October 11, 2016. Gene was born the son of Raymond and Lorene (Moore) Lewellyn on July 3rd 1936 in Ghent, Ky. Gene married Tina Turner on August 7th, 1959 who he loved for more than 57 years. She survives. Also surviving are two grandsons Chris and Aaron Lewellyn. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Walter and his son Ray. Gene served his country in the United States Army from 1953 until 1957. After returning home, he worked at Kraft Foods in the dog food division starting in 1960 for twenty some years. He later went to the Public Safety Building in Danville as Custodian for over twenty years. Gene was a volunteer at the Hospital as a Red Coat, he was a member of the Vermilion Heights Christian Church, the American Legion Post 210. He loved to just read his bible, most of all spending time with his family was Gene's biggest enjoyment. A Celebration of Gene's Life will be held at 2pm on October 18, 2016 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Danville at 3940 N. Vermilion St. Pastor Rod Godley will officiate. Following the service American Legion Post 210 will honor Gene with military rights. Visitation will be held at the funeral home one-hour prior. Per Gene's wishes cremation will be accorded at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Vermilion Heights Christian Church in Gene's name.
