Gene Dixon,92, a cherished member of the Covington community, passed away on January 31, 2026, at Carle Hospital in Urbana, Illinois. Born on February 9, 1933, in Warren County, Indiana, Gene lived a life marked by dedication, service, and a deep commitment to his family and community.
Gene had a fulfilling career as a steel buyer at Hyster, where his work contributed to the success of the company and the betterment of its employees. His professional life was complemented by his military service in the United States Army, where he proudly served his country.
In addition to his career, Gene was known for his spirited involvement in his community. He played a significant role in helping to establish WFOF's radio tower, ensuring that the station could take to the airwaves and serve the public with its broadcasts. His contributions extended beyond his profession; he was also a member of the Maranata Baptist Church in Covington, Indiana, where he found fellowship and purpose. Also, a Mason of the 32 degree being involved for over 60 plus years.
Gene’s interests included farming, mowing grass, and watching basketball and football on television — activities that brought him joy and satisfaction. Those who knew him will fondly remember these pastimes, which reflected his love for the outdoors and sports.
Gene is survived by his beloved wife of over 70 years, Eunice (Courson) Dixon, son Bruce (Jackie) Dixon, and grandchildren Kari (Fletcher) Mangum, Kali (Justin) Dixon, and Logan Dixon. He also leaves behind great-grandchildren Avery and Knox, who brought him much joy and pride.
He is preceded in death by his father, Paul Dixon, his mother, Ada (Goff) Dixon, his son, Jeffrey Dixon, his granddaughter, Lexi Dixon, and an infant sister, Helen Sue Dixon.
The memories he leaves behind will forever resonate with those fortunate enough to have known him.
A visitation will be held on Friday February 6, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, followed by a funeral service starting at 1:00 PM at the Sunset Funeral Home & Cremation Center's Covington Chapel in Covington, Indiana.
