Gary F. Whittaker, 71, of Danville passed away on Thursday, June 28, 2018 at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born on June 27, 1947 in Ottawa, Illinois, the son of Harry and June (Finchem) Whittaker. He will be dearly missed by brothers; Harold (Jill) Whittaker of Gulf Shores, Alabama and Burt (Rose) Whittaker of Ridgefarm, Illinois, sister: Karen (Roger) Ladd of Madisonville, Kentucky and several nieces and nephews. Gary was preceded in death by his parents and sister Sharon Whittaker. He was proud to serve his country in the United States Navy. Gary was a graduate of Danville High School in 1966. He worked at Quaker in Danville and the University of Illinois in the Astronomy department working on their telescopes. In his free time, he enjoyed exploring caves and volunteering his time at Kennekuck mowing and maintaining the park. A celebration of Gary's life will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, July 2, 2018 at Sunset Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 3940 North Vermilion St. Danville, Illinois. A visitation will be held from 9:00 am - 11:00 am prior to service. He will be laid to rest in the Danville National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his honor to Kennekuck County Park, American Heart Association and Parkinson's Disease Foundation.
