Gary Dean Gossar, 67, of Danville, IL, passed away at his home on Friday May 9th, 2014. He was born the son of Garlin and Vernice (Dalton) Gossar on October 16th, 1946 in Rossville, IL. Surviving are two sons, Jonathon and Derrick Gossar, both of Terre Haute, IN; three brothers, Kevin (Linda Hinkle) Gossar of Danville, Mike (Angie) Gossar of Seymour, IN, Barry (Teresa) Gossar of Westville; three sisters, Leona Halstead of Danville, Carrie Ping of Perrysville, IN, and Janice (Bud) Johnson of Lodi, IN; one sister-in-law, Carol Gossar of Anderson, IN; two grandsons, Walter (Nicole) and Terre Dean of Oakwood; two granddaughters, Mikki and Johnnie of Terre Haute, IN; one great grandson, Noah of Oakwood; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and many friends. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, William (Bill) and Garlin Gossar, one sister, Judith “Judy” Snow, two brothers-in-law, Raymond Halstead and John Snow, his grandparents, and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Gary graduated from Danville High School in 1964. He served in the United States Navy on the USS St. Paul with a total of 27 months of his time spent in Vietnam. After his time in the Navy he went to work for L and N Railroad, later retiring from CSX Railroad. He was a member of the Hooton Church of Christ and attended South Side Church of Christ. Gary liked to go fishing with his buddies and enjoyed going to stock car races. He was a Dale Earnhardt fan and liked watching NASCAR as well as any type of sport. Recently he had been following young Bobby Pierce and his racing. Gary also enjoyed reading. He loved to travel and at least once a year visited his friend Gary (Pam) Richards. This friendship started at the Hooton School and they had entered the Navy together. Most of all, Gary loved spending time with all of his family. The family got together every Sunday after church for lunch. After lunch Gary and others would watch sports, often having conversations about whose team or driver was the best. Gary was loved by all who knew him and will be missed dearly. A Celebration of Garys life will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at Southside Church of Christ in Danville. Officiating will be Evangelist Kevin Ziegler. A Visitation will be held from 4:00 - 8:00 PM on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home in Danville. Burial will be at Stearns Cemetery.
