Oakwood Gary Andrew James, 73, passed away on Saturday, November 19, 2022 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, IL. He was born on August 12, 1949 in Danville, IL to Albert and Betty (Welker) James. Gary married Janice Richards on June 13, 2009 in Danville.
Gary is survived by his children Jeff (Jessica) James and Brian (Tammey) James; step-children Paul (Amanda) Richards, Russell (Amanda) Richards, and Benjamin (Sheena) Richards; grandchildren Emilee, Jessica (Derek), Xavier, Alaina, Seth, and Allison; step-grandchildren Jensen, Easten, Owen, Danica, Emily, Callan, Hannah, and Payton; great-grandchildren Trace, Eli, Jude, Angelina, and Natalia; brothers-in-law George (Marty) and Dave (Rosie); sisters-in-law Bev (John) and Sally; special neighbors Sherry Mascari, George Lane, and Jeff & Lynn Palmer; other family and friends; and his dog Sadie. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Edward James; and brother-in-law Jim.
Gary was the current president of the Illiana Antique Automobile Club, a member of the National Fishing Lure Collectors Club, a member of the Vermilion Heights Christian Church, and an Oakwood village board member for 3 years. He was a volunteer at the Vermilion County Museum, youth baseball and football coach, and boy scout den leader. Gary spent 10 years on the board at Leisure Time as the treasurer and gatekeeper, and he met his wife Jan while working on the gate. He liked to be out in the sun and he loved animals. Gary enjoyed painting, art, fishing, collecting antiques, and civil war reenactments. His favorite food was chocolate. Gary attended Tilton Grade School, Southview Middle School, Danville High School, and DACC. He worked in trucking and railroading as a dispatcher.
Visitation will be held from 5-7pm on Friday, November 25, 2022 at Vermilion Heights Christian Church, 725 Oakwood Ave. Danville, IL 61832. Service will be held at 10am on Saturday, November 26, 2022 at the church. Rusty Richards and Rod Godley will officiate. Cremation will follow. Memorial donations may be made in Garys name to Vermilion Heights Christian Church Angel Tree or Illiana Antique Automobile Club.
