PAXTON- Florence A. Hockenberry, 71, passed away on Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at Heartland Healthcare in Paxton. Her husband of 52 years, Fred E. Hockenberry, passed away on Friday, January 24, 2014, also at Heartland Healthcare in Paxton. Florence was born on July 8, 1942 in Danville, the daughter of Joseph and Florence OBrien Dietz. Fred was born on February 19, 1941 in Danville, the son of Edward and Adaline Drews Hockenberry. Fred and Florence met while students at Danville High School as part of Civil Air Patrol and were married on October 22, 1960 in Danville. They are survived by their daughter Teresa (Scott) Fulling of Bloomington; three grandchildren, Andrew, Jessica and Jonathan Fulling of Bloomington; Florences brother, Joe (Rosemary) Dietz of Danville; Freds sisters, Dorothy Johnson of Danville, and Betty (Ethan) Brown of Colorado; several nieces and nephews and a dedicated friend and caregiver, Leroy (Heather) Brodian of Loda. They were preceded in death by both sets of parents; Freds brother-in-law Russell Johnson; Florences brothers, Edward and Donald Dietz and half-brother, Paul Dietz; and a special uncle, Martin P. “Bud” OBrien. Fred was a veteran of the Illinois Army National Guard, serving for 27 years. Florence was a homemaker and stay-at-home mother. His career provided them the opportunity to reside in several communities of central Illinois including Danville, Sullivan and Rantoul before finally settling in Paxton. As a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus and American Legion, Fred along with Florence enjoyed being active and social wherever they lived. During their younger days, both enjoyed participating in bowling leagues. Fred also participated in recreational softball. Florence always enjoyed doing word puzzles and playing card games. Pets, including their Chihuahua Toby, have been an important part of their lives. They were dedicated to each other and spent much time together. They were always loved by their friends for their easy going nature. Fred will be remembered for how he cared for Florence during her last few years. A private celebration of Fred and Florences lives will be held at a later date.
