Florence Josephine Tabels, 90, of Danville, folded her earthly tent in her sons home to enter the abode prepared for her by her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, September 12, 2009. Florence was born February 17, 1919 in Danville, the oldest daughter of Herbert W. and Ida E. Schultz Drews. She married Harlan W. Shag Tabels on June 14, 1942. He preceded her in death on October 20, 1990. Together they raised five children- Karen (Paul) Shanks of Evanston, David (Susan) Tabels and Maralee Trosper of Danville, Stephanie (Jeff) Ross of Champaign and Matthew Tabels also of Danville. She had 24 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren at the time of her passing. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother- Herbert O. Drews and son-in-law- Terry Dode Trosper Sr. Her life was dedicated to the Lord, her children and her career. She had a great love of God and served faithfully in the church. Her hand quilted banners flew over Washington D.C. and around the world and she shared her gifts wherever and whenever she could. She was a gifted artist, as well as a dedicated nurse. She was a graduate of Danville High School and Saint Elizabeth School of Nursing, class of 1939 and worked as the Operating Room Supervisor at Saint Elizabeths Hospital for many years. Her tenderheartedness and compassion for others was obvious to everyone who knew her and she never sought personal recognition. A Celebration of the Life of Florence Josephine Tabels will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 18, 2009 at The Rock Church in Danville, with Pastor William Hummer officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Danville. Burial will be in Danville National Cemetery following the service.
