Everett Lewis Laury

Everett Lewis Laury, 91, passed away on February 24 at Goldwater Care in Danville, IL. He was born August 31, 1932 (a day when the Cubs beat the Giants 10-9) in Chicago, IL to parents Everett Moses Laury and Erma Lewis Laury.

Ev, as he was known to those closest to him, is survived by Peggy, his loving wife of 62 years; his children, Ann (Paul) Luciani, Susan (Mark Brewer) Laury, and Cathy (Don) Wiese; grandchildren, Libby and Jacob Luciani; and brother, Bob (Linda) Laury of Mason, Texas. He is also survived by his two feline family members: his cats, Elsie and Frankie. Preceding him in death are his parents and brother Charles Laury.

After graduation from DePauw University, Everett enlisted the U.S. Army where he served a hardship assignment in Hawaii. He left active duty to attend Northwestern Law School. He served in the Army Reserves. He retired as a Lt. Colonel but never lost hope that he would be called back up to active duty.

Everett loved his family. He always lit up when his wife walked into the room. He was a devoted father and grandfather, always happy to take his family out to dinner and often travelled great distances to attend his loved ones running events.

Other than his family the two things he loved most were the law and sports (in particular the Chicago Cubs). Everett was proud of being a lawyer and was never happier than when his love of sports intersected with his legal practice. One of the proudest moments of his legal career was when he represented the Kansas City Kings. He was a Cubs fan 'through thin and thin" as he liked to say and was surprised and delighted when the Cubs won the World Series in 2016.

Everett was active in St. James United Methodist Church and many community organizations. For years he was involved in local elections as a precinct committeeman and member of the Danville Election Commission. He served for many years as a member of the Vermilion County Museum Board.

A memorial service in his honor will be held at 1pm on Saturday March 2 at St. James United Methodist Church, 504 N Vermilion St, Danville, IL 61832. He will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at Danville National Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 3940 N Vermilion St., Danville, IL, 61834.
