Eugene Joseph Walag

Danville - Eugene (Gene) J. Walag Sr., 85, of Danville, passed away on Saturday May 14, 2016 at Presence Covenant Medical Center in Urbana, IL. He was born on March 14, 1931 in Chicago, IL to Peter & Stephania (Koziol) Walag. He was the eldest of three with a younger brother & sister. Eugene married Dolores T. Gawlik on December 6, 1952 at Good Shepard Church in Chicago. She preceded him in death after 63 years of marriage. Eugene is survived by his six children Kathleen (Melvin) Hoaks, Carol (Thomas) Raup, Eugene Jr. (Judy) Walag, Kenneth Walag, Richard (Michelle) Walag, Lisa (Troy) Mitchell; several grandchildren & great-grandchildren; and his brother Zenon Walag of California. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Dolores. Eugene was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church & the Knights of Columbus, Fourth Degree. He was a past Commander of the American Legion Post 210. Eugene was a veteran of the Korean War, commissioned a 2/Lt. at Officers Candidate School, Ft. Benning, Ga. honorably discharged as Captain. He was active for many years with scouting in the Piankeshaw Council; he worked with the Webelos, was a Cub Master, Scout-a-Rama Chairman, & Vice President for Cubs. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1pm on Friday May 20, 2016 at Sunset Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 3940 N. Vermilion St. in Danville. Officiating will be Father Greg Nelson. Entombment with military rites will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Danville. Visitation will be held from 4pm-7pm on Thursday May 19, 2016 at the funeral home.
