Eugene Alkire, 86, of Covington, passed away on September 1, 2023, at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana with family by his side. Gene was born on August 19, 1937, in Warren County Indiana the son of Leonard and Grace (Gross) Alkire. Gene married the love of his life Dixie Wilson on April 5, 1959, she survives. Also surviving Gene are his children; Christy Watkins, Steven (Ginger) Alkire, Gail McLain and Scott Alkire, his grandchildren; Brandi Bragg, Shaun and Brent Stonebraker, Chealsie Beedle, Skylar Alkire, Trace and Trenton McLain and Mitchell Beck JR., ten great grandchildren, three sisters; Shirley Cook, Reatha Walls, and Charlotte Meldrum, one brother Larry Alkire. Gene was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter in law Meg Alkire. Our Dad, Gene, was a wonderful Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother, Friend, and Co-worker. He was married to Dixie Wilson for 64 years. One of his greatest attributes was his work ethic. He worked 3 jobs at the same time when he was raising his family. He retired after 36 years as a Maintenance Mechanic at TeePak. He was very involved in his kids and grandkids sporting and school activities. He loved spending his summers watching baseball at the Covington Park during that time. In his 40s, he took up running and completed 14 mini marathons. He liked to tell people that he ran every day for 4 full years, including sweltering summer days and freezing cold winters. After his running days were over, he walked many, many miles in Covington and his winter hometown, Lakeland, FL. He also was an avid motorcyclist, who went on many road trips. He enjoyed going to the gym and most recently, Max Fitness, where he achieved a record of 800 lbs on the leg press. After his eyesight got too bad to drive anymore, you could find him all over the town on his electric trike. Hes a member of Second Church of Christ in Danville and rarely missed a Sunday service. He loved God with all of his heart and at the end was ready to see Him. We are all going to miss him so much, but we know well see him again!! A memorial visitation will be held for Gene on Wednesday September 6, 2023, at Sunsets Covington Chapel 420, 3rd street in Covington, Indiana from 5:00pm to 7:00pm (EST).
