Fithian - Ethel Mae Eichhorst, 90, of rural Fithian passed away Sunday, November 25, 2018 at Eureka Apostolic Christian Home, Eureka, Illinois Ethel was born on March 7, 1928, in rural Oakwood, the fifth of ten children to Wesley and Mildred (Eldridge) Richter. She married William Henry Eichhorst on October 1, 1950, he preceded her in death on January 2, 2016, after 65 years of marriage. She is survived by two daughters: Julia Vickrey (Ed) of Aledo, Illinois, and Janie Eichhorst-Smith (Brian Smith) of rural Carlock, and three grandsons, Donald William Vickrey, Derek William Smith, and Trevor Joseph Smith. Ethel is also survived by one brother, Tom Richter of Hoopeston, one sister, Linda Richter of Oakwood, and three sister-in-laws, Betty Jean Shepherd of Ogden, Karen Richter of Oakwood and Frances 'Tootie' Richter Burrows of Danville. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, 4 sisters, Dorothy Mitchell, Margaret Brothers Hersh, Cleta Fern Richter, and Norma McVey, 3 brothers, Howard Richter, Frank Richter, and Robert "Bob" Richter, and one brother-in-law, Vere Shepherd. Ethel was a very active farm wife, and often involved in the labor and management of the farm with her husband. She also worked at various clerical and bookkeeping jobs before and after her marriage, with the longest tenure as the secretary of Fithian Grade School for 14 years. She graduated from Oakwood High School as the Salutatorian of the Class of 1946. Ethel was an active member of Muncie Baptist Church as long as her health permitted. She was a member of the Governor Bradford Chapter of the DAR. She loved nature, working outside, animals and butterflies. She looked forward to mushroom hunting with her sisters every year. She loved her grandsons and her favorite activity was spending time with her family. A Celebration of Life for Ethel Eichhorst will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at the Muncie Baptist Church. Rev. David Garver will officiate services. Burial will follow at Stearns Cemetery in Fithian, IL. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services at the church. Memorials donations may be made to Muncie Baptist Church or a charity of the donors choice.
