Ethel Jack Olive Irvin Pettice, 93, of Alvin, passed away at 7:15 a.m. Tuesday, September 13, 2005 at North Logan Healthcare in Danville. Ethel was born on November 22, 1911 in Adams County, Ohio, the oldest of four children of Charles Marion and Margaret Elizabeth (Unger) Irvin. Her father called her Jack from the time of her birth and that nickname stuck throughout her life. Her mother died when she was eight during the 1918-1919 flu epidemic and she was raised by an aunt and uncle, Nelson and Alice Catherine Bussard, on a farm southeast of Collison, Illinois. She was married to Parker Hanson and surviving from this marriage is a daughter, LaDonna (Richard) Johnson of Danville. She was married to Oliver Burton Bert Pettice who preceded her in death on July 7, 1970, and surviving from this marriage are three daughters, Jean (Robert) Lete of Alvin, Carol (Roy) Goin of Rossville, and Audrey (Sherrell) Overlander of rural Alvin. Also surviving is a foster son Larry Joe Thomason of La Crosse, Wisconsin. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great-grandchildren. She is survived by a sister, Jessie Tatman of Uhrichsville, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her son Carl Lee Speed Pettice, an infant daughter, Barbara Jo Pettice, and an infant grandson. Three brothers and one sister also preceded her in death. Ethels whole life was devoted to her family and she will be forever missed. A celebration of life services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 17, 2005 at Bethel Cemetery in Alvin, with Tim Carey officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Danville.
