Ervin W. 'Sy' Syfert

Tilton - Ervin W. "Sy" Syfert, 96, of Tilton, IL passed away at home on April 28, 2018 at 9:11 am. Ervin was born on January 19, 1922 the son of Rev. Ernest and Rev. Celesta (Lauffland) Syfert in Elk Point, SD. He was united in marriage to Mary Emma Shively on June 22, 1943 in St Louis and she preceded him in death on October 25, 2014. Ervin and Mary courted for three years before their marriage and were married for over 71 years. Survivors include two daughters; Doris Jean Smith of Charleston, IL and Nancy Hogue of Tilton, IL, one brother; Paul (Nancy) Syfert of Paris, IL, nine grandchildren; Richard E. Wahlfeldt, Marianna Robbs, Anna Marie (Mark) Goddard, Robert E. (Madonna) Wahlfeldt, Adam (Nelly) Syfert, Megan Syfert, Charles E. Syfert, James H. Baldwin and Tom W. Rowland, 24 great-grandchildren and 11 great great-grandchildren. Ervin is preceded in death by his parents, wife; Mary Emma, one son; Ronald D. Syfert, one brother; Norman Syfert, and two sisters; Violet Hayes and Virginia Roberts. Ervin served in the United States Army from December 29, 1942 until January 1, 1946 and was a Bronze Star recipient. While in the Army he served in Guadalcanal, Cebu Island, and the Philippines, where a shark swam around him. Ervin retired from General Motors in the Pattern Shop after 33 years of service. After retirement, Ervin owned and operated a saw sharpening business, switched to restoring and selling bicycles and later had a woodworking venture. In his free time, Ervin enjoyed taking his children to the Drive-In movies, was an avid fisherman, enjoyed cooking and always had two large gardens. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, May 4, 2018 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 3940 N. Vermilion Street, Danville, IL. Rev. David Rogers will officiate. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 3, 2018 from 5:00 - 7:00 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park with Military Rites accorded by American Legion Post 210.
