Ernest W. Mayer Jr.

Ernest W. Mayer Jr., 82, of Georgetown, passed away Thursday, December 10, 2020 at Pleasant Meadows Senior Living, in Chrisman, IL, where he had been a resident since September 2015. Ernest called "Ernie" by his family, was born January 31, 1938 in Danville, IL, the son of Ernest William Mayer Sr. and Mary L. (Willis) Mayer.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ernest Mayer Sr. of Ohio and his mother, Mary L. Curtis, of Georgetown, IL. He survived by his brothers, David R. Mayer of Chrisman, IL, Robert Mayer of Dayton, OH, Anthony Mayer of Middletown, Ohio, Carl Mayer of Katy, TX, George Curtis of Catlin, IL, and Steven Curtis of Randolph, WI; two sisters, Judith Griffith of Ocala, FL and Susan Tressler of Franklin, OH. Ernie is also survived by nieces, Lynette Shelton, Susan Gardner, Sydney Curtis and Lauren Curtis; nephews, Rusty Mingee, Philip Curtis, Matthew Brown and Jeffrey Curtis.

Ernie attended Danville High School and graduated in 1956, served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1959, in Korea. He attended and graduated from Olivet Nazarene College, Bourbonnais, IL in 1970, obtaining a Bachelor of Theology degree. He was especially interested in photography, music and the arts. Ernie worked at Ford Motor Company in Chicago for five years, counselling and supervising children with Cerebral Palsy at Parents Assoc. in Chicago, desk clerk at Breakers Motel in Chicago and caseworker at cook county department of public aid. He made is his home in Kankakee, IL and was employed at Illinois Department of Human Services as a caseworker, until his retirement, moving to Georgetown, IL in 2000. Ernie was a member of First Church of the Nazarene in Danville, IL. He loved to sing and actively participated in the arts all his life. He had a genuine love of animals and nature. He was blessed with talents and intellect and was loved.

A Celebration of Ernies life will be held at 12:00pm on Saturday, December 19, 2020 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Georgetown, Illinois, 200 E. West St. Georgetown, IL 61846. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service at the funeral home. he will be laid to rest at Spring Hill Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made in his honor to Olivet Nazarene University or the humane society.
