Emma Atkinson, 94, born on June 15, 1930, in Juan Benito, Texas, passed away peacefully at her home on April 20, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Emma’s life was a tapestry woven with hard work, dedication, and a profound love for her family and community.
Emma began her professional journey at General Electric, where she served as a fabricator welder until her retirement. Her commitment to quality and craftsmanship was evident in her work, and she took great pride in doing her job well. Following her retirement, she transitioned to a beloved position at Westville Grade School, where she worked as a lunch lady and recess helper. Emma cherished the time spent with students, always delighted to see the children she had nurtured and guided during her years in the school.
An advocate for education, she pursued higher learning later in life, earning an associate degree in early childhood education from Danville Area Community College. This accomplishment spoke volumes about her dedication to personal growth and her deep-seated belief in the importance of education.
Emma was a devoted mother to her three sons, James of Pheniox, AZ, Scott of Hawbuck, and Kevin of Oakwood, and she held a special place in her heart for her nine grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. Her family was the center of her universe, and she loved spending quality time with them, creating lasting memories filled with laughter and love.
Emma was preceded in death by her parents, Joe Salinas and Catalina Garcia, her husband Curtis Atkinson whom she was married to for 59 years until his passing on November 12, 2020. Her sons Alan and Curtis Jr. Each of these individuals shaped her life and left an indelible mark on her heart.
She will be remembered not only for her professional accomplishments but also for her warmth, kindness, and the profound impact she had on those around her. Emma's legacy of love and dedication will live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 10am on May 5, 2025, at Sunset Funeral Home & Cremation Center's Urbas Chapel located at 414 S State St, Westville, IL 61883. Pastor Gary Farris will officiate. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park 3940 N Vermilion Street Danville, Illinois. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Sunday May 4, 2025, 2-4 pm.
