Elva Jarvis, 89, of Collison, Illinois passed away on April 30, 2011 at Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Danville. Elva was born on February 20, 1922 in Collison, Illinois daughter of Charles and Ethel (Byerly) Jarvis. Survivors include three cousins: Howard Hall, Blanche Byerly, and Alberta Cessna as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and eight siblings: Nina Taylor, Edith Tutwiler, William Jarvis, Nellie Turner, Walter Jarvis, Russel Jarvis, Carl Jarvis, and Pearl Jarvis. Elva attended Red Oak Grade School and graduated from Armstrong High School class of 1940. Elva spent her entire life on the family farm. She was a wonderful cook, loved flowers and gardened vegetables and fruits for canning. Elva enjoyed reading (especially the Bible), crocheting, quilting, and was an excellent seamstress; but above all she will be remembered as a warm and welcoming person that loved spending time with the children in the family. She has been a longtime member of the Hebron United Methodist Church in Newtown. A Celebration of Elvas Life will be held at 1:00 pm, Tuesday May 3, 2011 at Sunsets Oakwood Chapel, 105 East South Main Street, Oakwood, Illinois 61858, with Pastor Raymie Gordon officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Following the service, she will be laid to rest at Newtown Cemetery in Newtown, Illinois.
