Elmer Beachey

Elmer Beachey, age 92 of Mahomet, passed away Friday, November 20, 2015 at 5:30 am at the VA Illiana Healthcare Systems in Danville. He was born September 16, 1923 in Arthur, the son of Joel and Elizabeth (Gingerich) Beachey. Elmer married Betty Jean Empson in 1947 in Mattoon. She preceded him in death on June 2, 1997. Surviving are his son, Roger (Nora) Beachey of Mahomet; daughter, Julia Beachey of Mahomet; grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth and Aaron Roger Beachey, and his daughter Julia's children, Becca, Daniel, Alysia, Sadie, and Lindsey Beachey; brother, Louis Beachey of Texas; sister, Lizzy Ann Miller of Arthur; and many other friends and family who will miss him dearly. He is preceded in death by his parents, loving wife, 2 brothers, and 7 sisters. Elmer served his country in the United Sates Marine Corps during WWII. He was an acting Sargent and Corporal during peace time. Elmer was in active combat for 19 months and was at the Battle of Guam and the Battle of Ima Jima. After the Battle of Ima Jima, Elmer was transferred back to Guam and worked at the ordinance shop. He then advanced to be in charge of the battalion ordinance shop with acting rank of Top Sargent. After his honorable discharge from the military Elmer owned several businesses. He was a workaholic and always had to be busy doing something. Elmer's son Roger and he enjoyed remodeling a building houses together. When Elmer was not working, which was rare, he enjoyed playing golf, hunting, and fishing. He was a member of the Decatur Masonic Lodge and 32nd degree mason as well as an active member of the 7th Day Adventist Church on Campus in Champaign. Visitation will be from 1-6 PM November 27, 2015 at Sunset Funeral Home & Cremation Center Champaign Urbana Chapel, 710 N. Neil in Champaign A celebration of Elmer's Life will be held after the visitation at 6:00 PM at the funeral home. Pastor Bob Chestnut will officiate.
