Elizabeth C Norvilitis

Elizabeth C. Norvilitis, 101, of Westville, passed away at 9:25pm, Thursday, January 9, 2014, at North Logan Health Care, Danville. She was born on October 17, 1912, in Belgium, Illinois, the daughter of John Joseph and Mary Ellen {Szenan} Mayoros, both deceased. She was united in marriage to Walter P. Norvilitis on June 4, 1938, in Westville, until his passing in 1989. Elizabeth was a first generation non-English speaking immigrant whose family valued higher education as part of the American dream. She attended Westville Schools and then became a teacher with Westville School District, as well as, a homebound teacher of Profound & Severe Handicapped children. She taught at Washington, Edison, McMillan, and Wingard Schools. She and her husband also owned and operated the Westville Coney Island for 30 years. Elizabeth was a member of St. Marys Church and the Altar & Rosary Society, as well as, the director of the Church Choir. She was also member of the Westville American Legion Auxiliary and Westville Library Board. Elizabeth also started the first Girl Scout Troop in Westville, the Westville Lone Star Troop. She also belonged to the Retired Teachers Association. In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles, listening to music, & was a veracious reader. She will be missed dearly by: her son, Stephen M. Norvilitis of Stock Island, FL; her daughters, Joan Foyer of Westville, Catherin (Abu) Norvilitis-Alam of Lake Forest, IL, Martha (Edward) Levin of Westville, & Mary (Joseph) Tamalunis of Georgetown; her grandchildren, Beth (John) Quigley, Debra (Stan) Michelin, Ramon (Lashay) Foyer, Michele (Dan) Schuster, Bret (Jill) Norvilitis, Walter Latif Alam, Piari Alam, Rachel Atwood, Andy Atwood, Erica Levin, Elizabeth Tamalunis, & Caroline Tamalunis; her 17 great grandchildren; her 2 great-great grandchildren; her sisters, Johanna Burch of Fallbrook, CA, & Karen Mayoros of Belgium. She was preceded in death by: her daughter, Walta Norvilitis; her sister, Mary Valerie Mayoros; and her brother, Steve J. Mayoros. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00am, Tuesday, January 14, 2014, at St. Marys Church, Westville, with Fr. Sauppe officiating. Visitation will be 5pm-7pm, Monday, January 13, 2014, at Sunset-Urbas Funeral Chapel, Westville, with a Rosary being held at 4:30pm. Memorial donations may be given in her name to St. Marys Church or Westville Public Library. She will be laid to rest in Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery.
