Newport, Ind. - Eleanor Burroughs, 79, of Newport, passed away at 12:08 p.m. EST Sunday, January 6, 2013 at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was born December 24, 1933 in Newport, Indiana, the daughter of the late Frayne and Thelma Myers Whittington. She was formerly married to Bradley Wickens. She later married Jack D. Burroughs on March 17, 1972 in Lyford, Indiana. He survives. Other survivors include her children, Troy(Ann)Wickens and Todd(Kim)Wickens both of Cayuga, Indiana; Teila(Joseph)Luth of Perrysville, Indiana; 11 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; three sisters, Elaine(Loren)Kinderman of Tangier, Indiana; Janet Froese of Bristol, Indiana and Judy(Joe)Frink of Newport, Indiana; special friends, Brenda Wickens and Rick Jumps. Eleanor was preceded in death by her brother, Ed Whittington and brother in law, Sam Froese. Eleanor formerly worked as a secretary for the ASCS office in Newport. She was a member of the Newport Friends Church and was the current pianist and treasurer, Wacky Weeders Garden Club and the Newport American Legion Auxiliary Unit 184 serving as Chaplain. Eleanor was a 1951 graduate of Newport High School. She enjoyed gardening, working on crafts, searching for arrowheads and other artifacts, cooking, baking and antiquing. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Funeral services: 10 a.m. EST Thursday, January 10, 2013 at DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Indiana; Officiating: Pastor Garry Hendricks; Burial: Thomas Cemetery in Newport, Indiana; Visitation: 5 to 9 p.m. EST Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to the Newport Friends Church, Newport, Indiana 47966.
