Elbert Newton, Jr.

Cayuga, Ind. -- Elbert Newton, Jr., 61, of Cayuga and formerly of Leitchfield, Kentucky, went to be with the Lord at 7:22 p.m. EDT Thursday, September 4, 2008 at Terre Haute Regional Hospital in Terre Haute, Indiana. He was born March 24, 1947 in Shivley, Kentucky, the son of the late Elbert and Ida Borden Newton. He married Thelma Tines on June 28, 1974 in Cayuga, Indiana. She survives. Other survivors include: one daughter, Ora Jean(Tracy)Jaggers of Anneta, Kentucky; one son, Willie Newton of Veedersburg, Indiana; two granddaughters, Mandy and Aleisha Jaggers; six sisters, Barbara(Tommy)Hensel of Columbus, Ohio; Patsy Cox of Danville, Illinois; Wanda(Donnie)Horton of Leitchfield, Kentucky; Peggy(Randy)Diechmiller of Glasgow, Kentucky; Sandy(James)McCrady of Caneyville, Kentucky and Nancy(Billy)Farrow of Custer, Kentucky; one brother, John David Newton of North Edwards, California; Brother/Sister in law, Jerry(Cindy)Tines of Cayuga, Indiana and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Glenn and Charles Newton. Elbert formerly worked at Discount Interiors in Leitchfield, Kentucky. He was a member of the Spirit of Life Ministries in Kingman, Indiana. Elbert enjoyed reading the Bible, singing, gospel music, helping people through working at the local food pantry, going to Pow Wow's and his family. Funeral services: 10 a.m. EDT Monday, September 8, 2008 at DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Indiana; Officiating: Pastor Steve Crum and Rev. Terry Mullins; Burial: Thomas Cemetery in Newport, Indiana; Visitation: 2 to 6 p.m. EDT Sunday, September 7, 2008 at the funeral home.
