Edwin “Bruce” Gritten, 78, of Cayuga went to his eternal home on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at Union Hospital in Clinton. He was born on July 31, 1946 in Bradley, Illinois to the late Elba and Flossie Gritten.
Bruce attended Urbana High School and graduated with the Class of 1964. He proudly served his country as a mechanic in the United States Navy. Bruce returned home after being honorably discharged from the Navy and took a position as a deputy for the Champaign County Police Department. He then accepted a position with AT&T, where he would continue the rest of his 30 year-long career before his eventual retirement. AT&T had him working in several areas throughout the years including Decatur, Danville, and Urbana.
Bruce was an avid Cubs fan, and in his younger years he enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was a member of the Cayuga Christian Church, which afforded him many valuable friendships. He was a proud member of the NRA and will be dearly missed by so many.
Bruce is survived by his wife, Lynda Gritten; his sister Marilyn (Tim) Pittman; his children Angie Rhoads, April (Jerry) Burton, Monte Dalton, and Seth Gritten; his stepchildren Kelley Johnson and Karla Acord; 10 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his most loyal companion, Sadie.
In addition to his parents, Bruce is preceded in death by his brother Paul Gritten and his grandson Anthony Burton.
A funeral service celebrating Bruce’s life will take place at 12 pm EST on Thursday, August 29, 2024 at Cayuga Christian Church, located at 406 S. Logan Street, in Cayuga. A visitation will be held prior to the service that day from 11 am to 12 pm, also at the church. Memorial contributions in his name may be made out to Cayuga Christian Church. He will be placed to rest at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Champaign at a later date. Online condolences and fond memories can be shared with his family at www.sunsetfuneralhome.com
