Edward William Lakner, 82, of Champaign-Urbana, IL died August 21, 2024. He was born August 22, 1941 in Cleveland, OH, the son of Edward William and Helen Conley Lakner. He married Hilda Mayer Buckley on July 9, 1983 in Urbana, IL. She survives. Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Kevin Lakner Jonson and Kristen Mennen of Phoenix, AZ; son and daughter-in-law, Darren and Melanie Lakner of Whittier, CA; and son, Aaron, and daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Buckley, of Mercer Island, WA. Other survivors include granddaughter, Olivia Lakner, and grandchildren Elise Buckley, Ronan Buckley, and Augustus “Auggie” Buckley. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Ruth Lakner. He attended schools in Shaker Heights, OH, received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado Boulder, and his doctorate from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He was employed at the University of Illinois until his retirement in 2006. He was an avid traveler and had interests in vintage cameras, photography, astronomy, and loved classical music. He spent many hours listening to Mahler, Beethoven, Brahms and Bach. A remembrance will be held in honor of Edward Lakner on Wednesday, October 23rd at 10am at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center 710 N. Neil St. Champaign, IL. 61820
