Edward "Ed" Merchen, 94, of Danville IL. passed away at 2:04 am on Monday February 11, 2013 at Provena Untied Samaritans Medical Center in Danville. Ed was born on February 11, 1919 to Joseph and Mary (Ertel) Merchen in Oldenburg IN. He married Rose Waclaw on May 27, 1950 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Westville IL. She preceded him in death on December 11, 1999. Ed is survived by his son Gregg (Karen) Merchen of Vilas NC and daughter MaryAnn Merchen of Danville. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Marion and Robert Merchen and sisters Clara Speth, Stella Merchen and Lettie Kaiser. Ed spent his early life in Indiana where he graduated from Oldenburg High School and attended Indiana University where he earned a B.S in Chemistry. He worked for 43 years as a salesman and loved every minute of it thanks to the many friends he was able to meet. A devoted member of St. Paul's Catholic Church Ed was a member of the Knights of Columbus and active in the Kiwanis Golden K. Ed enjoyed volunteering in the community, spending time surrounded by the flowers he grew and he was a loyal Indiana University sports fan. A celebration of Ed's life will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday February 14, 2013 at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Danville with Father Greg officiating and entombment at Resurrection Cemetery in Danville. A visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on Wednesday February 13, 2013 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home in Danville.
