Edward DeRay, 79, passed away at 10:50 AM at his home in Oakwood, IL on April 19, 2023.
Edward was born on November 12,1943 the son of Edward and Maxine (Goble) DeRay in Louisville, KY. He married his high school sweetheart, Mary Andrews, on September 1, 1962.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Mary DeRay of Oakwood, his daughter, Amy (Timothy) Steinbaugh of Danville, IL, two grandchildren, Max (Lindsey) Steinbaugh and Sarah (Max Thurman) Steinbaugh and one great-granddaughter on the way. He is also survived by his sisters, Charlene (Bob) Marble of Danville, IL and Bonita (Danny) Coon of Alabama as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, John DeRay.
Edward served as the Superintendent of Public Works for the Village of Oakwood for over 40 years. He also served on the Oakwood Village Board and was instrumental in bringing the library to the Oakwood community. He owned and operated Kickapoo Canoes for several years as well. A man of many talents, he was a competitive aerobatic pilot, a knife maker, and a proficient woodworker. He enjoyed fishing, flea markets and traveling. His favorite place to visit was Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Most of all, Edward loved his family especially his grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, April 24, 2023 at Sunsets Oakwood Chapel, 105 E. South Main Street Oakwood, IL. Kiley Garrison will officiate. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2-4:00 PM Sunday, April 23, 2023 at the funeral home in Oakwood.
Memorials may be made to the Oakwood Public Library.
