Covington, Ind. - Edsel E. "Mac" McConnell, 84, of Covington, passed on from this world at 10:50 p.m. CST Saturday, January 14, 2012 at the VA Illiana Health Care System in Danville, Illinois. He had been a patient there for three weeks, battling cancer for the past thirteen months. Edsel was born August 12, 1927 in Olive Hill, Kentucky, He was the fourth child of the late Rev. E.E. McConnell and Opal Lambert. Edsel first married Mary Unekis and from this marriage they had five children, Eleanor McConnell of Danville, Illinois; Janet Lewis of Covington, Indiana; Mary Ann(Carl)Eades of Crawfordsville, Indiana; Barbara(John)Yoho of Cayuga, Indiana and Edsel(Mary Jo)McConnell of Fishers, Indiana. Other survivors include his wife, Barbara Dinsmore McConnell; step daughter, Jennifer Dinsmore of Covington, Indiana; eleven grandchildren, David(Amanda)Eades; Jerot Eades, Jennifer(Doug)Sutherlin, A.J.(Jess)Lewis, Andy Yoho, Kelly Yoho, Emily(Kyle)Ross, Eric, Zach, Cody and Mariah McConnell; seven great grandchildren, Devin, Brad and Andrianna Eades; Alexandra Sutherlin, Gabrielle Lewis, Evan and Aubrey Yoho; one brother, Virgil(Katie)McConnell; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Elnora Thurman and Odell Worgum; one niece, Pam Hubert. Edsel served first in the United States Navy from 1944 thru 1946 on the USS Murrelet, a mine sweeper ship during World War II. He then served proudly in the United States Army from 1951 thru 1954 as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne during the Korean War. Edsel worked as a millwright at Olin/Flexel for thirty years retiring in 1986. He was a member of the Sterling Christian Church in Veedersburg, Indiana; Covington V.F.W. #2395, Perrysville American Legion Post #350 and the Korean War Association in Danville, Illinois. Edsel was an avid golfer, playing daily. He made six hole-in-ones over the years. Edsel also enjoyed hunting, singing and traveling. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Funeral services: 2 p.m. EST Thursday, January 19, 2012 at the Sterling Christian Church in Veedersburg, Indiana with military rites by the Perrysville American Legion Post #350; Officiating: Rev. Gary Johnson; Visitation : 4 to 8 p.m. EST Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Indiana and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church. Cremation following services with burial of cremains to be at a later date in Mount Hope Cemetery in Covington, Indiana.
