ATWOOD- Edna Mae Yates, 83, of Atwood, formerly of Villa Grove, passed away on Monday, December 1, 2013 at Provena Covenant Medical Center in Urbana. Edna was born on June 6, 1930 in Humboldt, Illinois to Jesse and Nola Copas Gillenwater. Surviving are two children, Larry (Gail) Yates of McHenry and Susan (LeRoy) Conner of Atwood; one sister, Bertha (Guy) Davis of San Antonia, TX; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; sons, Mike and Gary Yates; one brother; and one sister. Edna worked for many years as a cook in local schools and the Champaign Jail. She also spent much of her working life as a Home Health Aid. She loved caring for others, and will be fondly remembered for her loving, tolerant, genuine, honest, and patient nature. Edna loved the simple things in life. She was known for her love to travel, read, shop, and go antiquing. But, the thing she will always be most remembered for is her wonderful cooking. A graveside ceremony will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Grandview Memorial Gardens cemetery chapel. Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center 710 N. Neil St., Champaign has been entrusted with arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association in Ednas honor.
