Edna Colson

Edna (Dowers) Colson, 83, passed away on Friday, November 24, 2023, in Daniels, West Virginia. Edna was born on July 15, 1940, in Clinton, Indiana, to the late Henry and Mildred (Hathaway) Dowers, the third of seven children. She lived most of her childhood in Horseshoe, Indiana.

Just before she entered high school, Ednas family moved from Horseshoe to Cayuga. There, she was a proud 1958 graduate of Cayuga High School. Edna loved school and graduated as valedictorian of her class. The following February, she married Larry Colson of Tangier, Indiana, and they spent 43 wonderful years together in rural Cayuga, raising their three children, collaborating on craft projects, which they sold at the annual Bridge Festival and also gave away as gifts, and tending to their yard and gardens. Edna worked at Inland Container for 24 years, retiring in 1999. But she was always most content and comfortable at her home, enjoying time with family and friends. Edna always considered Cayuga to be her home.

Edna loved being a mom and took great pride in supporting her children in all of their activities. Both she and Larry were very supportive of North Vermillion and of their community. She also loved tending to her flowers and maintaining a beautiful yard and welcoming home. She deeply loved her family and friends but held a particular fondness for her ten grandchildren. She enjoyed working puzzles with them, painting crafts, preparing special foods with them and setting out on local adventures. Every grandchild will forever cherish their special weekends with Mamaw.

Edna is preceded in death by her husband, Larry Colson; parents, Henry and Mildred Dowers; and three brothers, Henry (Bud), Clifford, and Ronald Dowers.

She is survived by three siblings: Norman Dowers (Janet) of Lodi, IN; Marsha Ernst (Bill), Mt. Vernon, OH, and Karen Dowers, Clinton, IN, brother-in-law, Walt Smith (JoAnne) of Fowler, IN, and sister-in-law, Charlotte Dowers of Cayuga, IN, and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her three children and their families: Mike (Stacy) Colson of Brazil, IN; Susan (Tom) Albright of Daniels, WV; and Beth (Chris) Meguschar of Noblesville, IN. Grandchildren: Kyle Colson (Nicole), Shelby Nichols (Eli), Zene Colson, Alexandra Smith (Dan), Jacob Albright, Emma Dorsey (Colten), Lucy Meguschar, Maxim Meguschar, Eliza Meguschar and Samantha Meguschar and five great-grandchildren: Jordan and Asa Colson, Benjamin and Eloise Smith, and Cameron Dorsey.
