Danville- Edith Farrell Spries, 97, of Danville, passed away Wednesday, October 17, 2012, at Colonial Manor, Danville. She was born June 29, 1915, in Westville, Ill., the daughter of Edgar and Annie (Payne) Farrell, both deceased. She was united in marriage to Alvin Louis Spries on June 27, 1937. When she met Alvin, she was teaching in a one-room school house, and he was a grocery store delivery driver. Once they were married and had a baby, she persuaded him to go to college to pursue a career in education. For more than 28 years, Alvin taught and served as a principal in schools in Westville and Danville. She earned a bachelor's of science degree in education from Eastern Illinois State College, and master's in education from Southern Indiana University. Her teaching career spanned more than 35 years in Danville, Westville and the surrounding rural areas. Edith and Alvin spent their retirement traveling, volunteering, and continually encouraging their granddaughters to earn as much education as possible. Both granddaughters are college graduates, and thank their grandparents for the encouragement and support to make that possible. Edith is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Alvin, their only daughter Bonnie Nauseda Shedd, and her brothers James and Roy. Surviving her are her two grand-daughters, Blythe Nauseda and Belinda McGhee (David), and her two great-granddaughters, Alexandra McGhee and Katherine McGhee, all of Austin, Texas. The family would like to thank Edith's extended family at Colonial Manor for their long-time care and concern. Services will be private. Memorial donations made be given in Edith's name to the Danville Public School Foundation, 516 North Jackson, Danville, Illinois 61832. Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.sunsetfuneralhome.com.
