Edgar Frank did not enjoy school as a boy, but he did love hunting and fishing on the ranch. When he was 13 years old, his father, Rufus, and step-mother, Mamie Combs, moved to Rosepine, LA. He graduated from high school there and enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served in the Marianna Islands until he was honorably discharged in 1945. Edgar Frank worked for his father on a ranch until shortly after marriage. After attending Ozark Bible College he preached at various churches in Kansas, Indiana, and Oklahoma. Later he joined his brother, Jay, in the Combs Automotive Company in Dodge City KS. From there he moved his family to Collinsville IL and worked with AVSCOM in Saint Louis MO. Edgar Combs retired and moved to Rogers AR with Emily after all their children graduated from high school. He was active in Rogers Christian Church during the 38 years he lived there. His love for electronics gradually moved from ham radio in the 60's to television repair to computer repair and tinkering. In 2012, Edgar Frank Combs was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia. Edgar and his wife moved to Champaign, IL to be near to their son, Timothy. Edgar Frank had many gifts and abilities doing the work of an electrician, plumber, and mechanic. He often had a screwdriver, flashlight, and pliers in his pockets to get ready for another project. He experimented with hydrogen power in the Collinsville basement, announcing that a 'smoke test' was imminent. Antennas became family projects in the 60's. Edgar Frank taught his sons to raise antennas on the roof in 40 mph winds that swept across the Dodge City area. These antennas connected them to the ham radio and television world. Grandpa Ed relished time with all his grandchildren. He was considered a church Grandpa to many of the young people at RCC. Edgar Frank lived a life of gentle service for others, behind the scenes.
