Dr. Edmund J. McCarthy died at 3:55 pm on October 14, 2008. The son of Dr. David H. and Ella (Giblin) McCarthy, he was born on December 26, 1922, in Springfield, Illinois. He was married to Cecile A. Hart on June 17, 1944 in Evanston, Illinois. He is survived by his wife, Cecile; son, David (Lynn) of Peoria; grandsons, Timothy (Stephanie) of Peoria, Brian (Wendy) of Raleigh, N.C., Daniel (Christina) and their children, Megan, Grace, and Finnegan James of Cincinnati, OH, Suzanne (James M.); and step-grandchildren, Kelly and Craig Sullivan of Danville. Also surviving is a sister, Helena (Jack) of Kokomo, IN; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, James Magner McCarthy (Suzanne); his parents, Dr. David and Ella McCarthy of Springfield, and six siblings. Dr. McCarthy completed he undergraduate education at Loyola Northwestern and Loyola Universities. He received the doctorate in optometry at Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago. He was a member of the U.S. Navy serving in WWII. Dr. McCarthy formerly was in private practice in Jacksonville, before joining Chittick Family Eye Care, where he practiced for 20 years, before retiring in 1990. Dr. McCarthy served as Ambassador in the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce and as Esquire in the Elks Club. He served as President of Kiwanis Golden K (1997-1998) and worked as a volunteer for CRIS, Library Outreach, and the American Legion. He was a longtime member of the Danville Boat Club, serving on the Board of Directors (1984-1985.) Dr. McCarthy was a member of St. Pauls Catholic Church. A funeral mass will be held at noon Saturday, October 18, 2008 at St. Pauls Catholic Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Following the service a private family committal service will be at Sunset Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the St. Pauls, Danville Public Library, or CRIS Senior Services.
