Dorothy L. Yow, age 81, of Danville, passed away Thursday, April 9, 2015 at 6:50 PM at her home. She was born November 4, 1933 in Saginaw, MI, to Olice and Alma (Chant) Hawes. Dorothy grew up in St. Charles, MI, Brant, MI, and Danville, IL. She attended Danville High School. Dorothy worked for Kresge, GE, and Bohn. She then became a stay at home wife and mother, taking care of her family. During this time she had a paper route and sold Avon. Dorothy married James Stitt in 1952 in Danville. They were married 11 years and had three children together. She later married William “Mose” Yow in 1964 in Danville. They were happily married for 41 years and had 2 children together. He preceded her in death on October 6, 2005. Dorothy was a member of the Grape Creek Baptist Church. She enjoyed being a Cub Scout leader and then was a Girl Scout leader for many years. Dorothy enjoyed ceramics, camping, riding horses, motorcycle riding, and ice skating. Dorothy also spent many Thursdays volunteering at the Humane Society in Danville. Dorothy is survived by her children, Penny (Travis) Shepherd of Danville, Cheryl Hyche of Westville, Robert Yow of Danville, Amy (Joe Calton) Cunningham of Danville; her sisters, Barb Taylor of Alvin, Shirley Norton of Danville; foster sister, Candice (Bob) Watson Stele of Decatur; 25 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; special friend, Donna Watson; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives. There are also so many children that call her grandma and love her so much. She was preceded in death by her parents, Olice and Alma Hawes, her loving husband William, her son Kenneth Stitt, two grandchildren and one great grandchild. A Celebration of Dorothys Life will be Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Grape Creek Baptist Church. Pastor David Leary will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 PM Monday, April 13, 2015 at Sunset-Urbas Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials in Dorothys name can be made to Grape Creek Baptist Church.
