Covington, Ind. -- Dorothy M. Cotterell, 89 ,of Covington, Indiana, passed away at 11:02 a.m. EST Friday, December 5, 2008 at the Indiana University Simon Cancer Center in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was born May 5, 1919 in Veedersburg, Indiana, the daughter of the late Fred and Gertie Cates Abernathy. She married Mervin Cotterell, February 10, 1949 in Covington, Indiana. He preceded her in death April 10, 1992. Survivors include two daughters: Sue(John)Hallett of Noblesville, Indiana and Janet(Stanley)Roe of Port St. Lucie, Florida; a sister, Ruth Bever of Covington, Indiana; nine grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends, all of whom she greatly appreciated. She was preceded in death by a son, Meredith; sisters, Wilma Banks, Wanda Summers and infant sister Hazel Mildred; a brother, Frederick; a grandson, Danny Roe and a great grandson, Ethan Roe. Dorothy was a 1937 graduate of Kingman High School and a 1939 graduate of the former Summers Beauty School, Danville, Illinois. She served two terms as Fountain County Recorder after which she owned and operated Cotterell Beauty Shop. She is past president of the Indiana Cosmetology Association. She was appointed by Gov. Otis Bowen as a member of the State Board of Beauty Culturist and appointed the Sagamore of the Wabash Award by Gov. Robert Orr. The Sagamore of the Wabash is the highest service award given by the state of Indiana. Dorothy was a member of the First Assembly of God Church, Covington. She enjoyed praying with the wonderful group of ladies who attended the Wednesday morning prayer meeting, worshipping and fellowship with her church family. She was also a 50 year member of the Covington Home Extension Club and a 50 year member of the Yeddo O.E.S. and the Fountain County Women's Republican Club. She appreciated her health care providers. Funeral services: 11 a.m. EST Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at the First Assembly of God Church in Covington,Indiana; Officiating Pastor Mark McMinn and Pastor Bob Fairchild; Burial: Mount Hope Cemetery, Covington; Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. EST Monday, December 8, 2008 at the church and 1 hour prior to services on Tuesday. Contributions may be made to the First Assembly of God Church, 421 Market Street, Covington, Indiana 47932 or to the Gideons. DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Indiana in charge of arrangements.
