Covington, Ind. - Dorothy Delores Howard High, 83, of Covington, Indiana, went to be with the Lord at 1:26 p.m. EDT Friday, September 16, 2011 at St. Elizabeth Central Hospital in Lafayette, Indiana. She was born March 26, 1928 in Covington, Ind the daughter of the late Schuyler L. and Mary A. Robb Cates. She first married William G. Howard Jr. on April 27, 1946. He preceded her in death on November 7, 1978. She later married Alvie A. High on October 9, 1993 at the Assembly of God Church in Covington. He preceded her in death on September 15, 2002. Bill and Delores were the proud parents of seven children: Gary (Charlotte) Howard of Williamsport, Indiana, Steve Howard (deceased), Linda Phillpott of Danville, Illinois, Dennis Howard (deceased), Brenda (Dean) Daggy of Thorntown, Indiana, Leila Bird of Covington, Indiana and David, who shares his birthday with her, (Retta) Howard of Covington, Indiana, 14 grandchildren; several great and great great grandchildren and one brother, Harold (Angela) Cates of Bernyn, Illinois. Preceding her in death in addition to her two husbands and 2 sons, Dennis and Stephen are three sisters Mary Eleanor Salts; Louise King and Martha Davan; two brothers, Charles and Leroy "Bud" Cates; two step-sisters, Thelma Cadman and Edith Green; one step-brother, Louis Cates and a step-daughter-in-law, Mary Reeves. During her young life Delores worked at Paxton's Drug Store, General Electric Sewing Factory and was employed by Margaret White of Covington. Delores, Bill and her two sons were caretakers at Mount Hope Cemetery for two years. They built their own tri-level home in Covington. She made silk flower basket arrangements for family members graves and sick friends. She and Doris Jones started the Christian Singles at the Assembly of God Church in Covington, also meeting in the homes. Delores loved family get togethers and was noted for her homemade yeast rolls, noodles, baked ham and homemade German Chocolate Cake which Linda, Brenda and Leila have her recipes. She enjoyed playing Euchre, Bingo and spending time with her family and friends. Delores deeply loved her children, grand and great grandchildren, all of her friends at the Assembly of God Church in Covington, especially the Ladies Prayer Group and all relatives. She loved her classmates and the memories they have. Delores was a witness for Jesus Christ and prayed all of her children and family would attend church regularly. Funeral services: 11 a.m. EDT Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at the Assembly of God Church in Covington, Indiana; Officiating: Pastor Bob Fairchild; Burial: Mt. Hope Cemetery in Covington; Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. EDT Monday, September 19, 2011 and one hour prior to services on Tuesday at the Assembly of God Church, 421 Market Street, Covington, Indiana.
