Donald Richard Barnes, 84, of Danville, passed away on Thursday, April 18, 2019, at Champaign-Urbana Nursing and Rehab. He was born on March 27, 1935, in Danville, Illinois, the son of Walter Paul and Olga Elfrieda (Voigt) Barnes. He was united in marriage to Alice J. Leisch on November 17, 1956. She survives.
He will be dearly missed by sons, Stuart, Dr. Stephen (Dawn), and Thomas (Karen) Barnes; daughters, Pamela Barnes and Penelope (Bruce) Garrison; sister, Kathleen (Robert) Wakeley; grandchildren, Matthew (Ella) Garrison, Sarah Garrison, Rachel Garrison, Christopher (Emily) Barnes, Connor Barnes, and Michael Barnes.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Don attended Trinity Lutheran School, graduated from Danville High School, and attended General Motors Institute (Kettering University). He worked for General Motors as a manufacturing supervisor. He enjoyed coaching little league for his sons teams. After retirement, he loved to travel, taking four trips to Europe. He was involved with the Golden Kiwanis, Vermilion Festival Chorus, and University of Illinois Oratorio Society Chorale. He enjoyed line dancing and ballroom dancing, watching baseball, attending the Indy 500, and traveling across the country with his family.
Don was strong in his faith, having been baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, where he had served as an Elder and Sunday School superintendent. He loved his family dearly. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren for who they are and what they have accomplished.
A celebration of Dons life will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, April 23, 2019, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1930 North Bowman Ave. Danville, Illinois 61832. A visitation will be held from 4:00 pm 7:00 pm on Monday, April 22, 2019, at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Danville, Illinois, 3940 North Vermilion St. Danville, Illinois 61834. He will be laid to rest in the Lutheran Cemetery in Danville. Memorial donations may be made in his honor to Trinity Lutheran Church or Immanuel Lutheran Church.
