Donald K. Thompson

Champaign - Donald K. Thompson, 92, of Champaign, passed away at 10:50 PM on Monday, December 29, 2015 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. He was born on June 28, 1923 in Elvaston, IL to James W. and Bertha W. (Bachman) Thompson. He married Phyllis R. Burkholder on August 31, 1947 in Chillicothe, IL. She preceded him in death on February 10, 2013. He is survived by two children, Michael K. Thompson of Champaign and Kris Ducey, also of Champaign; two step-brothers, Dick and Jack Bradley of Chillicothe, IL; four grandchildren, Eric (Carol) Ginder of Decatur, Andrew Thompson of St. Louis, Ethan Thompson of Champaign, and Grant Thompson of Champaign; three great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great grandchildren, with number 13 on the way. Don served his country in the United States Army during WWII where he was a radio operator in the amphibious forces. Don then began work for Alexander Warehouse as a travelling salesman and the manager for the Urbana warehouse until he retired from the main offices in Aurora, IL. He had also managed Long Lumber Company and worked for Thompson Lumber. Don would often perform the odd woodworking job, but also enjoyed bowling in the Elk's League where he was a member, and performing with his barbershop quartet. A service to celebrate the life of Don Thompson will be held at 11 AM on Monday, January 4, 2016 at Sunset's Champaign-Urbana Chapel. His grandson, Pastor Eric Ginder, will officiate. Burial will follow at Grandview Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10-11 AM prior to the service, also at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
