Donald J. 'Speed' Coonce

Cayuga, Ind. - Donald J. 'Speed' Coonce, 75, of Cayuga, passed away Saturday, March 6, 2021 at Fort Walton Beach Medical Center in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.

He was born June 1, 1945 in Clinton, Indiana the son of the late Donald and Mary (Hargrove) Coonce, Sr.

Don married Stella Jane Bishop on April 22, 1967 in Newport, Indiana. She survives.

Other survivors include two daughters: Gina (Brian) Byrum of Perrysville, Indiana and Jill (John) Heerema of DeMotte, Indiana; four grandchildren: Katie (Jon) Bemis, Kevin (Fianc Gracie Horvath) Byrum, Jacob Heerema and Ellie Heerema; brother: William 'Bill' Coonce of Bunker Hill, Indiana, and numerous special friends.

Don was preceded in death by his sister: Mary Jane Griffin.

Don retired from Clark Chevrolet in Cayuga as the service manager after 50+ years. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during the Vietnam War. His memberships included the Cayuga Christian Church, Cayuga Lions Club, Twister Car Club in Clinton, Indiana, Cayuga American Legion Post 263 and the NHRA (Former Pro-Driver). Don was a graduate of South Vermillion High School. He enjoyed watching NHRA, NASCAR and basketball. He especially enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren whom he adored.

Funeral service: 3 p.m. EST Friday, March 12, 2021 at the Cayuga Christian Church Youth Center; Officiating: Ashton Stewart; Burial with Honors: Thomas Cemetery, Newport, Indiana; Visitation: Noon EST until time of services at the Cayuga Christian Church Youth Center. The wearing of masks will be required for entry. The family request contributions to the Cayuga Christian Church, Cayuga Lions Club or to the Cayuga American Legion Post 263. DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Indiana is assisting the family with arrangements.
