Donald G. Longer

MORTON - Donald G. Longer, 89, of Morton, Illinois, formerly of Danville, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April1, 2017, at AC Restmor in Morton. Donald was born March 29, 1928, in Danville, Illinois, to Harry and Anna J. (Jones) Longer. He married Donna J. Chezem on August 19, 1950, in Danville, Illinois. She preceded him in death on September 27, 2013. Donald is survived by his daughters Vickie (Michael) Longer-Boatmen of East Peoria, Illinois, and Candy (Randy) Kaluza of Morton, Illinois; grandson Michael (Trisha) Kaluza of Morton, Illinois: and three precious great-grandchildren, Haley, Layton and Auburn. Also surviving are three nieces and one nephew. He was also preceeded in death by his parents and sister Juanita (Longer) Biedermann. In 1950, Donald graduated from Illinois College, Jacksonville, Illinois, where he was captain of the football team and also played basketball. He graduated with a B.S. in Accounting. Donald served in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1952. His forty-year career with Hyster Company also began in 1950. He held many positions including Plant Manager at their Danville, Illinois; Irvine, Scotland; and Portland, Oregon, facilities. He retired in June of 1990. He loved and served the Danville community and his church, Ridgeview Baptist, in many different capacities. His favorite pastimes included restoring and showing classic, antique vehicles and fishing with friends and family. He also enjoyed creating unusual clocks out of discarded hubcaps. Donald's unwavering faith and love of family was his comfort and strength. A service to celebrate the life of Donald Longer will be held at 10 AM on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center at 3940 N. Vermilion St. in Danville. Pastor Mark Keyser will officiate. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 4-7 PM on Wednesday, April 5, also at Sunset in Danville.
