He was born in Danville, IL, on August 27, 1927, the son of James Everett and Grace {Mellert} Smith. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Ann' Spang on January 23, 1949, in Georgetown. She will miss him dearly. He is also survived by: his three sons, Kent (Diann) Smith of Georgetown, Steve (Anne Marie) Smith of Santa Maria, CA, & Dennis (Annette) Smith of Ridge Farm; his fourteen grandchildren, Jennifer (Shawn) Burnett of St. Joseph, Justin Smith of Danville, Jason (Danielle) Smith of Georgetown, Crystal (Jon) Obayashi of San Luis Obispo, CA, Tim Smith of Grover Beach, CA, Marshal Smith of Bakersfield, CA, Elizabeth Smith of Santa Maria, CA, Samuel Smith of Camp Pendleton, CA, Amanda (Scott) Pittman of McCordsville, IN, Jacki (Patrick) Wilson of Georgetown, Kaitlin (Jacob) Harden of Bondville, Logan (Paige) Smith of Kankakee, Regan Smith of Ridge Farm, & Reed Smith of Ridge Farm; ten great grandchildren, Colin & Ethan Burnett, Everett Smith, Eliana Obayashi, Isabell, Bianca, Jacob, & Maezie Pittman, Jackson & Emersyn Wilson, and soon to be two more great grandchildren. Don's entire life revolved around the family farm and agriculture. He started farming his grandfather's 80-acre farm with an 8-N Ford tractor after high school, where he raised hogs and had a small dairy operation. With Ann's side by side help, he was able to continue raising hogs and expand his farm so that two sons could join the operation. Don's heritage of owning, conserving, and improving productive east central Illinois farmland began with his great-great grandfather in 1829. Don's community service included serving on the boards of Vermilion County Farm Bureau, Georgetown Fair Association, Federated Co-op, Olivet Grade School, and the Olivet Holiness Association. He was a member of the East Central Illinois Pork Producers. At the time of his death, he held the longest standing membership at the Olivet Church of the Nazarene where he had attended continuously since his birth. He emphatically encouraged regular worship attendance to his family. Don thoroughly enjoyed his afternoon trips into town for coffee with his friends and those friends were very good to Don. Don and Ann were able to enjoy travel to many places in the world and also made many friends as a result of these trips. Some of the most cherished times were the late summer getaways with their dear friends, Bob & Pat Winland and Earl & Martha Hargan. Don will be missed by all those whose lives he touched. A celebration of Don's life will be held at 2:30pm, Sunday, November 12, 2017, at Olivet Church of the Nazarene, 5054 Olivet Road, Georgetown, with Pastor James Blue & Rev. Scott Pittman officiating. Visitation will be held 3pm-7pm, Saturday, November 11, 2017, at the church. He will be laid to rest in Georgetown Cemetery.
