Danville – Donald “Don” R. Coon, Sr., 90, of Danville passed away at 4:35 AM on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at OSF Sacred Heart in Danville. He was born January 26, 1935, in Danville to Roy and Anita (Webber) Coon. He first married Evelyn (Devins) Coon on June 25, 1956, with whom he had two children. She preceded him in death on June 20, 1997. He later married Joyce (Steelman) Coon on February 13, 1999. She survives.
He is also survived by his two children, Cris (Kenny) Moulton of Bismarck and Donald R. (Tammy) Coon, Jr. of Danville; two step-children, Tracy (Derek) Fenwick of Nokomis, FL and Mark (Jill) List of Danville; five grandchildren, Stacey (Curt) Ohmes, Angela (Craig) DePotter, Andrea (Ryan) Delhaye, Philip Coon, and Patrick (Jailisa) Coon; six step-grandchildren, Jordan, Josh, and Abby Fenwick, Zak (Judielle) Fenwick, Elizabeth (Matthew) Reining, and Anna List; 15 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; and three nieces and nephews, Scott and Bruce Baldwin, and Linda Maxwell.
In addition to his first wife, Evelyn, Donald was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Mary Alice Baldwin.
After graduating high school, Donald served his country by enlisting in the United States Marine Corp where he served during the Korean War. In 1955 he was honorably discharged from the Marines as a Staff Sergeant but remained in the Reserves for an additional 12 years. During his Marines career, Don earned the UN Service, Korean Service, National Defense Service, and Good Conduct Medals. After the military, Donald went to work for Illinois Bell as a telephone repairman. As the company evolved into AT&T and later Nokia, he continued his work until retirement. Donald also owned and operated his own business installing telephone lines and systems for residential and businesses in the area.
Donald was a man of faith as was seen in his active involvement with his churches. He served as a board member and Sunday school teacher at Pleasant Grove Bible Chapel in Danville, and had volunteered for the Church Construction Corp.
A service to Celebrate the Life of Donald R. Coon, Sr. will be held at 11 AM on Monday, December 1, 2025, at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 3940 N. Vermilion St., Danville, IL 61834. Pastor Mark List will officiate. Private burial will take place at Sunset Memorial Park in Danville. Visitation will be held from 10-11 AM prior to the service on Monday, also at Sunset in Danville. Memorials in Donald’s name may be made to Pleasant Grove Bible Chapel.
