Don Paul Woods

Georgetown Dr. Don Paul Woods, 88, passed away on Saturday, November 5, 2022 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, IL. He was born on November 11, 1933 in Shelbyville, IL to Paul G. and Flossie (Rankin) Woods. Dr. Woods married Sonja Thomason on November 9, 1956. She predeceased him on July 21, 2015.

Dr. Woods is survived by his son Mark; grandchildren Leah (Ryan) and Trevor (Kaitlyn); great-grandchildren Gia, Annabelle, Sam, and Brinley; brother Jon (Barb); "adopted" family Jeff, Billie Jo, Fro, Wendy, and Faith McDaniel. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and sister Marg Durham.

Dr. Woods earned his bachelors degree in education at Eastern Illinois State; masters degree at Millikin University in Decatur, IL; and PhD in school administration at Illinois State. He taught English and social studies in Decatur, IL before becoming the assistant superintendent in Danville a position he held for five years before becoming the superintendent there in 1974. He became the superintendent of Racine, WI schools in 1982, retiring from there in 1991. He was instrumental in implementing the desegregation program in Danville. Dr. Woods served in the 298th Army Band in Berlin, Germany from 1957 to 1958. His wife also accompanied him during that tour of duty.

Private graveside service with military honors will be held at 2pm on Monday, November 14, 2022 at Sunset Memorial Park in Danville, IL. There will be no visitation. Please join Dr. Woods family in sharing memories on his tribute wall at sunsetfuneralhome.com.
