State Line City, IN - Dennis L. Cope, 68, of State Line City, Indiana left this world on July 6, 2023. He did it in true Dennis fashion- kicked back in his recliner. Never one to be a bother, he was at home surrounded by his wife and kids. He entered this world on December 2, 1954 to Elizabeth and Charles Cope.
Dennis was famous for driving fast, working hard, and falling off roofs. (Five years ago, he got to take his first helicopter ride after falling off his seventh roof.) He loved riding bikes but learned that motorcycles and bicycles just werent for him. So instead, he enjoyed watching NASCAR on Sundays, mushroom hunting, and always got his hands dirty working on something. He worked at Gemco for 34 years and took on construction jobs as well.
He was also known for his big heart. He would give you the shirt off his back- hope youre skinny! His family witnessed him give his last dollar to help someone else and have memories of him buying presents and food for a single mom and her kids for Christmas. He was a loving father and grandfather. His family soon learned that they would get a quarter, or the occasional butterscotch, for every beer brought to him. With that in mind, every grandkid would rush off to be the first to grab him one (though they truly only wanted the quarters). He loved spending time with his grandkids. He enjoyed sharing stories of his past with them but did not hesitate to also put them to work.
Dennis is survived by his wife Laurie Greene Cope of State Line, Ind., and his children Shannon (Paul) Morrison of Marshfield, Ind.; James (Ann) Cope of Evanston, Ind.; Luke (Sarah) Cope of Sharpsville, Ind.; and Betsy (John) Reece of Pana, Ill. He also leaves behind his grandkids Courtney, Patrick, and Sherrie Morrison; Bradley and Hayden Cope; Bella and Lena Cope; Bentley Reece; Alanna Reece; and Ivie Mills; 8 great grandkids; and his siblings Marjory (Russ) Rudolph of State Line, Ind.; Sharon Rudolph of Danville, Ill.; and John (Linda) Cope, also of State Line, Ind.
He has been reunited in death with his parents, and his brother, Robert "Bob" Cope.
A visitation to celebrate his life will be held on Tuesday, July 11, 2023 from 4-7 pm at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, located at 3940 N. Vermilion Street in Danville.
