David Lee Briggs Sr.

David Lee Briggs, Sr., 74, of Westville, IL passed this life at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, November 28, 2015, at his home. David was born on June 24, 1941 in Danville, IL, the son of Robert Ray Briggs and Evelyn Geraldine (Prouty) Briggs. David (Dave) was married "55 years" to Joyce (James) Briggs in Danville, IL on June 25, 1960. She survives. Other survivors include: one daughter, Lisa Lynn Nargelenas (Romas) of Westville, IL. and one son, David Lee Briggs, Jr. (Angie Hanner) of East Alton, IL, formerly of Georgetown, IL, and (4) grandchildren: Michael (Rachael) Nargelenas of Champaign, IL; Amanda Marie Nargelenas of Vincennes, IN; Emily Jo Briggs (Will) of Springfield; and Erika Lynn Briggs of Indiana State University, Terre Haute, IN, along with a daughter-in-law Cheryl Briggs of Tilton, IL. Other survivors include sisters-in-law: Betty Ann Young (Ron) of Westville; Georgette Puzey (Lee) of Catlin, along with her and our special family friend Ben Smith of Catlin. David was blessed with several nieces, nephews, and cousins that he loved and enjoyed speaking with. He was preceded in death by his parents: Evelyn & Robert (Bob) Briggs of Danville; a brother Robert (Sara) Briggs of Indianola; and a sister Candice (Ralph) Johnson of Ballwin, MO; along with many sister-in-laws, bother-in-laws, that he shared many great times with. In his early years, David was a journeyman meat cutter in Danville, prior to working and then retiring from General Motors Central Foundry (Tilton, IL) after 27 years in 1990 - UAW member. He was a "die-hard" St. Louis Cardinals fan, Illinois fan, and a Westville Tiger fan. He also enjoyed Nascar on Sundays and Judge Judy throughout the week. He always said that he had the "best seat in the house" by being at home in his Lazy-Boy recliner in front of the TV. He, (Grandpa), and wife (Grandma), mostly loved watching his grandchildren in school - mainly high school sporting and scholastic activities. He was blessed with very active children (Lisa & Davey) and grandchildren that kept him happily busy and made him so proud. He would make sure that "everyone in the crowd" knew where they got all their talents from. Grandpa would always be sure to arrive early with his own lawn chair to make sure he reserved his seat in the front row. He was so well liked by everyone, in many cases, people he didn't even know. Many of you would see him out-and-about, and he would go out of his way to greet you. Schroeders & County Market (North Vermilion) were his final places of choice that he visited and made new friends with every day. Dave (mostly known as Dad and Grandpa) had many hobbies that included coaching, camping, fishing, hunting, and mushrooming. Dave also enjoyed spending time in his own backyard in his swimming pool making memories with friends and family. In his early years, Dave liked to have a beer in his hometown of Westville. Dave would also spend time betting at the horse track and casino, gambling with family and friends. Finally, one last hobby Dave left a memory of was beanie baby hunting in the rain or shine and being the first in line so that all four grandchildren had a full collection. A celebration of David's life will be held at 11:00am, Thursday, December 3, 2015, at Sunset-Urbas Funeral Chapel, Westville, with Father Sauppe officiating. Visitation will be held 4:00pm - 8:00pm, Wednesday, December 2, 2015, at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest in Georgetown Cemetery.
