David Lee (better known as Grandpa) Hackney, 76 of Ridge Farm, IL entered the gates of Heaven on November 21, 2024. David was born on February 22, 1948, in Danville, IL and was one of seven children between the marriage of Marvin and Alice Hackney.
David married the love of his life, Lory Denise (Wilfong) Hackney on December 28, 1989. There is no doubt that the 35 years they shared together were filled with more laughs than could be counted and more love than could be expressed in words. Their marriage was one that could withstand the greatest of storms. Keeping her promise to always take care of him, it goes without saying that Lory will miss her “hubson” so very much.
David was greeted in Heaven by his parents; Marvin and Alice, beloved daughter; Ashley, father-in-law; Samuel, mother-in-law; Mabel, (5) siblings; Marjie, Doris, Wanda, Harley, and Norma, and precious granddaughter, Ashlynn.
He will be forever missed by: his wife; Lory, sister; Charlotte, sister-in-law’s; Deed and Lynn, children; Kimberly (Bill) Wright, Stacy (James) Winslow, William (Carla) Bales, Mike (Renay) Conner, and Lucas (Nikki) Conner. Grandchildren; Brady (Bridget), Kaylee “Kelly” Jo, Tanner (Bridget), Heidi (Erin), Ali (Gary), Makenzie, Alex, and Michaila (Gage). Great-grandchildren; Kaine, Tayte, Paisley, Rylee, Carter, Dallas, Ethan, Noah, Lainey, Jaxon, Kendall, Peighton, Kalliope, Dreysen, Kenzlee, Elijah, and Sylas. 13 nieces/nephews, 21 great nieces/nephews, 43 great-great nieces/nephews, 12 great-great-great nieces/nephews, and special family friends Tom Smith and Ryan “Frack” Holman.
David would want to be remembered for his love of his country. As a US Army Vietnam Veteran, he took great pride in serving from 1967 to 1969. He was honored to have his name displayed on the Ridge Farm Veterans Memorial wall. During his 25-year employment at the Danville VA, he made life-long friends, and we are certain anyone working there could tell you a story or two about our “Star-Spangled Stud.”
As a man who never met a stranger, he would talk to anyone that would listen. Just ask the folks in Ridge Farm. You could spot him and his Illini, Cubs, or Bears car flags flying in the wind from a mile away. Win or lose, he was an avid Illini, Cubs, and Bears fan. Speaking of the Cubs, do you remember when they won the World Series in 2016? The screams heard around the world were those of Daves. It was without a doubt a moment that he took to the grave as being the best night ever.
Above all else, nothing brought him more joy than spending time with his family, especially all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The littles always knew that when Grandpa was around, the hugs would be big, the laughs would be loud, and the love would be endless. The void that is felt is a testament to the incredible man we loved and will miss immensely.
The family has entrusted Sunset Funeral Home in Georgetown with handling funeral arrangements. A visitation will be held from 2pm-5pm on Sunday November 24, 2024, at the funeral home. A funeral will be held at 1pm on Monday November 25, 2024. His final resting place will be at Crown Hill Cemetery in Ridge Farm. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to be made to “Wreaths Across America”. Please join David’s family in sharing memories, pictures and videos on his tribute wall at www.sunsetfuneralhome.com
