David A. DeJaeger, 75, of Catlin, passed away at 5:34am, Thursday, January 19, 2023, at Colonial Manor Nursing Home, Danville, IL. He was born in Danville on August 27, 1947, the son of Francis and Mary {Ray} DeJaeger, both deceased. He was married to Alice {Boots} Walker on February 10, 1973, until her passing on March 1, 2011.
David is survived by his stepson, Robert (Sheryl) Walker; his stepdaughter, Viki Potter; his step grandchildren, Darci (Jeff) Scott, and Kristin (Mike) Sanderson; his step great grandchildren, Hayli Brown, Ryder Brown, Brayden Scott, Teigan Sanderson, and Bryleigh Sanderson; and his brother, Phillip R. DeJaeger. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his sister, Mary DeJaeger; his granddaughter, Carla Potter; and his sister-in-law, Ann DeJaeger.
David graduated from Jamaica High School in 1965. He started working at Illinois Bell in 1967 as a lineman and splicer until his retirement on June 3, 1994. He was a proud Veteran of the US Navy Reserve serving 1966- 1972 active duty. He spent his time in Vietnam from September 1967 to December 1968 aboard the USS Perkins DD-877. David was a member of Davis-Busby American Legion Post #776 Catlin, IL, for over 50 years. He served as a Color Guard, Chaplain, Adjutant, and Post Commander. He was also a member of the VFW Post #728 Danville, IL, as well as a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
David had many interests and hobbies. He volunteered to deliver Meals on Wheels and at the JC Basketball tournaments. He served on the committee for Legion State Golf tourneys. He enjoyed all sports and was a Yankees fan as well as enjoyed watching Indy Car racing and playing golf. David and Alice enjoyed spending their winters in Arizona, Texas, and Florida.
A celebration of Davids life will be held at 2:00pm on Tuesday, January 24, 2023 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Georgetown, Illinois 200 E. West St. Georgetown, Illinois 61846, with Pastor James Blue officiating. Visitation will be 1:00pm to 2:00pm on Tuesday prior to his service at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest in Forest Park Cemetery, Georgetown. Memorial donations may be given in his name to American Legion Post #776, Catlin, IL or St. Judes Childrens Hospital.
