Darryl David Myers, son of Quincie Elmer Myers and Helen Francis Rholl, was born in Logansport Indiana on 29 October 1940 and passed away peacefully in his home in Danville, Illinois on 20 May 2024. His peace in death resonates from a calm assurance of his faith in his final destination as secured by the sacrifice of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. While the world will never know of all of Darryls exploits, those who knew him best serve as a living testament to his unwavering love for his family and his unapologetic commitment to his faith. Darryls faith was deeply rooted, not only in his superficial observation of the world in which he lived, but in his diligent scholarship of the scriptures themselves. Reading the Bible in its original Hebrew and Greek texts merely reinforced what he empirically experienced in his daily life. Although not an overtly emotional man, the transformative nature of his faith was clearly illustrated in the patience and often-times unmerited grace he demonstrated to others. While our family, the community, and the world has lost an incredible man, who enriched those around him with a firm handshake, a wry sense of humor, and invaluable wise advice, Darryls challenge to us today would be to earnestly contend for and persevere in the faith.
Professionally, Darryls passion was in education. His love for learning was readily apparent to even the casual observer. A life-long learner, Darryl began his collegiate academic journey at Purdue University where he was a member of the marching band. Never afraid of seeking out new challenges, he transferred to Bob Jones University, in Greenville, South Carolina, where he earned his undergraduate degree. Continuing his academic pursuits, Darryl would later attend the University of Minnesota, and ultimately Central Baptist Seminary in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he earned his Master of Divinity degree. Always looking for opportunities to academically enrich the lives of others, Darryl spent the preponderance of his professional life as a teacher and school administrator in Christian schools throughout the country. Even after "retiring" from his academic profession, Darryl continued to share his passion for learning with various Sunday school classes which he led, as well as with anyone who expressed an interest in having an intellectual conversation.
Throughout his life, Darryl loved being a father and was a consummate family man; and his affinity for fatherhood spanned well beyond the rearing of his own biological children. Over the years, Darryl served as a father-figure to countless young men. A modern-day renaissance man, Darryls hobbies included gardening, maple sugaring, playing the viola, visiting Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and coaching little league baseball. Darryl could not only tell you how to do something but was adept at explaining the science behind it. Darryls talent for coaching baseball was on full display during his years coaching first base in the Danville American Legion Baseball League where he was instrumental in his teams winning three championships.
Darryl is survived by his wife of 53 years, Carol; his children, Ann (Eric) Yingst, Polly Hart, Luke (Jennifer) Myers, Joshua (Hollee) Myers, and Audrey (Marcous) Crosby; fifteen grandchildren, Trey, Savannah, Gabriel, and Gunnar Yingst; Katarina, Andrew, and Benjamin Hart; Christian, Chloe, and Kaylin Myers; Guy, Logan, Keigan, Princeton, and Miles Crosby; two great-grandchildren, Milliona Crosby and Kassius Flores; a sister, Marilyn, and a brother, Douglas. He was preceded in death by his father, Quincie, and mother, Helen.
